Direct answer: A consumer AI skin scan should not be used to diagnose a mole or rule out skin cancer. A photograph can miss scale, firmness, depth, symptoms, evolution, surrounding context, and dermoscopic structures. Camera quality, lighting, skin tone, training data, and the app’s intended use also affect performance. A changing, asymmetric, bleeding, painful, or otherwise concerning lesion needs appropriate medical evaluation and sometimes biopsy.

A reassuring score is not a tissue diagnosis.

Why is a selfie limited?

A selfie is not standardized dermoscopy and cannot provide palpation, complete skin examination, or a verified history of change.

Can AI still help?

Validated tools may support triage or clinician workflow for defined tasks, but performance does not transfer automatically to every app or lesion.

What should trigger evaluation?

Change, asymmetry, irregular border, multiple colors, bleeding, nonhealing, new symptoms, or a lesion unlike the others deserves review.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI rule out melanoma?

Do not use a consumer beauty scan to rule out melanoma.

Is a dermatologist photo visit enough?

Teledermatology may help triage, but some lesions still require in-person dermoscopy or biopsy.

Does a low-risk score mean I can wait?

Not when a lesion is changing or clinically concerning.

Can makeup affect the scan?

Yes. Makeup, lighting, focus, angle, and compression can alter image features.

Are all AI apps medical devices?

No. Many consumer beauty tools are not validated or regulated as diagnostic medical devices.

Should I upload intimate-area photos?

Use an appropriate clinical channel and review privacy terms; do not send sensitive images to a casual beauty app.
