Dry Skin vs. Dehydrated Skin — They Need Completely Different Fixes
By Dr. Lazuk, Co-Founder and CEO of Lazuk Cosmetics® | Esthetics® | Alpharetta, GA
This is one of the most important distinctions in skincare.
Dry skin and dehydrated skin are not the same thing.
Dry skin is a skin type. It's genetic. Your skin produces less sebum than average. You've always needed richer products. Oils and emollients are your allies.
Dehydrated skin is a skin state. It's about water content — not oil. And it can happen to any skin type. Even oily skin.
Signs of dehydration: fine surface crinkling when you pinch the skin gently. Skin feels tight despite using moisturizer. Dull, flat complexion.
Signs of dry skin: rough texture. Flakiness. Persistent tightness since you can remember.
The fixes are different.
Dehydration responds to humectants — hyaluronic acid, glycerin — applied on damp skin and sealed with an emollient.
Dry skin responds to lipid-rich emollients and occlusives that supplement what the skin doesn't produce enough of naturally.
Treating dehydration like dryness — or vice versa — keeps people in a loop of frustration.
Know the difference. Fix the right thing.
May your skin glow as brightly as your smile.
