The Skin Benefits of Intermittent Fasting — What the Research Actually Shows
By Dr. Lazuk, Co-Founder and CEO of Lazuk Cosmetics® | Esthetics® | Alpharetta, GA
Let's look at intermittent fasting through a dermatological lens.
The research is genuinely interesting.
During fasting periods, the body shifts into autophagy — a cellular cleaning process where damaged and dysfunctional components are broken down and recycled.
Skin cells participate in autophagy. And early research suggests this process may remove accumulated cellular debris that contributes to dullness, uneven texture, and slowed regeneration.
Fasting also reduces circulating insulin and blood glucose. Lower glucose means less glycation — the process where sugar molecules damage collagen and elastin.
And reduced systemic inflammation — a well-documented effect of appropriate fasting protocols — benefits the skin directly.
This isn't a prescription for extreme fasting. And results vary significantly by individual.
But for those already practicing time-restricted eating for metabolic reasons?
There may be meaningful skin benefits as a bonus.
The skin is a window into your metabolic health.
May your skin glow as brightly as your smile.
