Toner: Necessary Step or Marketing Invention?

By Dr. Lazuk, Co-Founder and CEO of Lazuk Cosmetics® | Esthetics® | Alpharetta, GA

Let's settle the great toner debate.

Is toner necessary? Or is it just a product invented to sell an extra step?

The answer depends entirely on what kind of toner we're talking about.

Traditional astringent toners — the alcohol-heavy ones designed to strip excess oil and close pores?

Generally unnecessary. Often damaging. They disrupt pH and barrier function. And pores don't close from topical application anyway.

Modern hydrating toners or essences? Different story.

A well-formulated hydrating toner applied after cleansing — on damp skin — can replenish moisture, prep the barrier, and improve the absorption of everything that follows.

Think of it as a reset between cleansing and treatment. Not a stripping step. A softening one.

Some skin types benefit enormously from this step. Others don't need it.

The question isn't "should I use toner?"

It's "what does my skin need at this step… and is there something that delivers that?"

May your skin glow as brightly as your smile.
