What Is Slugging — And Should You Actually Do It?

Let's talk about slugging.

For those unfamiliar — slugging is the practice of applying a thick occlusive product, like petroleum jelly, as the last step of your evening routine to seal everything in overnight.

Does it work? For the right person… yes.

Occlusives create a physical barrier that dramatically reduces transepidermal water loss overnight. The result? Plumper, more hydrated skin in the morning.

For very dry, dehydrated, or barrier-compromised skin — it can be genuinely helpful.

But here's who should probably skip it.

If your skin is acne-prone or congested… the occlusion can trap bacteria and sebum in ways that trigger breakouts.

If you're using active ingredients like retinoids and then slug on top… You may be dramatically increasing penetration of those actives in ways that cause irritation.

Context matters. Skin type matters.

Slugging isn't a universal glow hack. It's a targeted tool.

May your skin glow as brightly as your smile.
