The Skincare Hydration Hack You Never Knew You Needed

By Dr. Lazuk, Chief Dermatologist and CEO of Dr. Lazuk Esthetics® | Cosmetics®

Most people think they understand hydration, but what they’re really responding to is comfort.

Skin feels tight, so they reach for something heavier. Skin looks dull, so they layer another serum. And for a short while, it helps. Then the tightness returns. The glow fades. And the cycle repeats.

That’s because hydration isn’t just about adding moisture. It’s about teaching the skin how to hold it.

Skin loses water constantly. Through evaporation. Through inflammation. Through barrier disruption that happens quietly from over-cleansing, over-exfoliating, stress, sun exposure, and even indoor air. When water escapes faster than it can be retained, the skin stays dehydrated, no matter how many hydrating products you apply.

This is where most routines quietly work against themselves.

Hydrating products behave very differently depending on how they’re applied. Completely dry skin has no surface water for humectants to bind to. In that situation, ingredients like hyaluronic acid can actually pull moisture from deeper layers instead of drawing it from the environment, which is why some people feel tighter after applying a “hydrating” serum.

Hydration works best when the skin is slightly damp. That thin layer of water on the surface gives humectants something to hold onto immediately, allowing hydration to move in the right direction instead of being borrowed from within the skin.

What comes next matters just as much.

Hydration needs to be protected. When water is drawn into the skin but not sealed, it evaporates quickly. A lightweight moisturizer or emulsion applied shortly after your hydrating step slows that evaporation and keeps moisture where it belongs. This doesn’t require heavy creams or occlusion. It requires timing and restraint.

When hydration is sealed properly, skin stops asking for constant reapplication.

Many people unknowingly keep their skin in a loop of attraction and evaporation by layering hydrating serums repeatedly throughout the day. It feels helpful in the moment, but it prevents the barrier from stabilizing. When the barrier is supported correctly, hydration lasts longer — and the urge to keep adding more naturally fades.

This is also the point where habits matter as much as products.

Over-cleansing, very hot water, frequent exfoliation, and aggressive treatments all increase transepidermal water loss. Even the most thoughtfully formulated hydrating product struggles when the skin is being stripped regularly. Often, improving hydration isn’t about finding something new. It’s about removing one habit that’s quietly undoing the work.

What I see most often is that skin finally becomes hydrated when it’s allowed periods of consistency. The same supportive routine, morning and night, is used long enough for the barrier to rebuild. When that happens, hydration stops feeling like something you have to manage.

Skin becomes comfortable. Flexible. Predictable.

And that’s the real hydration shift.

Not glossy skin for an hour, but skin that feels steady throughout the day. Skin that tolerates actives better. Skin that reflects light evenly without effort.

When hydration is done properly, it doesn’t feel dramatic. It feels calm.

And once the barrier is doing its job again, hydration stops being a struggle. It becomes the skin’s natural state.

Your Ultimate Winter Hydration Game Plan

Now that we’ve diagnosed the problem, let’s fix it! Here’s my dermatologist-approved hydration strategy to keep your skin happy all winter long:

1. Switch to a Hydrating Cleanser: Ditch anything foaming or stripping and opt for a gentle, creamy cleanser that won’t rob your skin of its natural oils.

2. Use a Hydrating Serum (or Two!): Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, peptides, and Centella Asiatica (like in my Rehydrating Face Emulsion!) to deeply hydrate and soothe irritation.

3. Moisturize Like You Mean It: Layering is key! Start with a lightweight hydration booster and follow with a richer moisturizer to seal it all in.

4. Don’t Skip the SPF: Winter sun (and snow glare!) can still damage your skin. A mineral sunscreen with hydrating ingredients (like my Natural Mineral Sunscreen) will keep your skin protected without clogging pores.

5. Humidify Your Space: A humidifier can work wonders in keeping moisture levels balanced in your home—especially while you sleep.

6. Drink More Water (But Also, Eat It!): Hydrating from the inside out matters too. Think water-rich foods like cucumbers, oranges, and avocados for an extra hydration boost.

That’s skin physiology finally being respected.
