Dry vs. Dehydrated Skin: How to Spot the Difference and What to Do
By Dr. Lazuk, Chief Dermatologist and CEO of Dr. Lazuk Esthetics® | Cosmetics®
One of the most common misconceptions I encounter as a dermatologist is the confusion between dry skin and dehydrated skin. Many of my patients assume they’re the same, but they’re not! While both can make your skin feel uncomfortable, they require different approaches to treatment. Today, I’ll help you understand how to tell the difference, what causes these conditions, and how you can achieve healthier, more radiant skin.
What’s the Difference Between Dry
and Dehydrated Skin?
Dry Skin
Dry skin is a skin type. It’s genetic and tied to a lack of natural oils (sebum). If you have dry skin, your sebaceous glands aren’t producing enough oil to keep your skin soft and hydrated. This can lead to flakiness, itchiness, and rough texture.
Common Signs of Dry Skin:
Flaky patches or visible roughness.
A tight, uncomfortable feeling, especially after cleansing.
Dull, ashy appearance.
Fine lines that are more noticeable.
Often accompanied by conditions like eczema or psoriasis.
Dehydrated Skin
Dehydrated skin is a condition, not a skin type, meaning it can happen to anyone—even those with oily or combination skin. Dehydration occurs when your skin lacks water, often due to environmental factors or lifestyle habits.
Common Signs of Dehydrated Skin:
A feeling of tightness, but without flakiness.
Dull, tired-looking complexion.
Shadows under the eyes or increased fine lines due to lack of plumpness.
Increased sensitivity or irritation.
Excess oil production (your skin might overcompensate for the water loss).
Common Causes of Dry and Dehydrated Skin
Dry Skin Causes:
Genetics: If your family has dry skin, you’re likely to have it too.
Aging: Sebum production naturally decreases with age.
Harsh Products: Over-cleansing or using alcohol-based toners can strip natural oils.
Dehydrated Skin Causes:
Environmental Stress: Air conditioning, heaters, and cold weather can pull water from your skin.
Lack of Water Intake: Not drinking enough water can show up in your skin.
Overuse of Exfoliants: Aggressive skincare routines can disrupt your skin’s moisture barrier.
Lifestyle Factors: Caffeine, alcohol, and stress can dehydrate your body and skin.
How to Tell the Difference
Here’s a quick test I often recommend to patients:
For Dry Skin: Look closely at your skin. Do you see flaking or roughness? If so, you’re likely dealing with dryness.
For Dehydrated Skin: Gently pinch your cheek. If it doesn’t bounce back quickly or you notice fine lines, your skin may be dehydrated.
Best Routines and Treatments
For Dry Skin:
Gentle Cleansing: Use a creamy, non-foaming cleanser. Avoid hot water—it strips natural oils.
Layer Hydration: Apply a hydrating serum (with hyaluronic acid) followed by a rich, oil-based moisturizer.
Protect: Always use sunscreen to prevent further damage and dryness.
For Dehydrated Skin:
Hydration First: Use a lightweight, water-based serum with humectants like hyaluronic acid or glycerin.
Seal It In: Apply a moisturizer with occlusive ingredients like squalane or dimethicone to lock in water.
Hydrating Masks: Incorporate treatments like my Hydrating Face Cloud Mask, which works wonders for both dry and dehydrated skin by delivering a powerful boost of moisture while calming irritation.
Drink Water: Skincare starts from within—aim for 8 glasses a day!
What You Should Never Do
For either condition, there are some universal “don’ts” to keep in mind:
Avoid Over-Cleansing: Washing your face more than twice daily can strip essential moisture.
Say No to Harsh Scrubs: Physical exfoliants can worsen both dryness and dehydration.
Skip Alcohol-Based Products: They dry out the skin barrier.
Don’t Overuse Actives: Overloading on retinoids or acids can exacerbate these issues.
When to See a Dermatologist
If you’ve tried adjusting your routine and still experience discomfort, it’s time to seek professional advice. I often see patients whose conditions require more targeted treatments:
Persistent dryness despite using rich moisturizers could indicate eczema or another underlying issue.
Dehydrated skin that remains sensitive or irritated might benefit from treatments like Hydrafacials or topical hydration boosters.
At Dr. Lazuk Esthetics®, we offer personalized consultations to help you identify the root cause and find the best solution for your unique skin.
Quick Tips for Your Skin Routine
Daily: Use a hydrating serum and moisturizer designed for your skin’s needs. Keep a humidifier running during dry seasons.
Weekly: Treat yourself to the Hydrating Face Cloud Mask to restore balance and glow.
Monthly: Schedule a professional-grade hydrating facial or treatment to give your skin the care it deserves.
Why I Recommend the Hydrating Face Cloud Mask
As someone who has tested and developed countless skincare products, I designed the Hydrating Face Cloud Mask to meet the needs of both dry and dehydrated skin. It’s packed with humectants, emollients, and calming botanicals to soothe, plump, and rejuvenate. Patients love its lightweight, airy texture and the way it transforms their skin after just one use.
With the right knowledge and care, both dry and dehydrated skin can be managed effectively. Whether you need to restore your skin’s natural oils or replenish its water content, understanding the difference is the first step.
